Officer Brian Cobb stoped the 2004 Acura on West Passaic Street on Wednesday after someone abruptly hopped into the back seat in the Shop Rite parking lot on Wednesday, Sgt. James DePreta said.

The car didn't have a front license plate, he added.

Cobb found the drugs, which the driver -- identified as 19-year-old Dajon Edwards of Passaic -- handed to passenger Demi Acevedo, also 19, of Linden, who tried to hide it, DePreta said.

Police also found an air soft imitation M-11 hand gun, with the orange safety tip painted black, "in order to be used in the commission of a [drug] deal," the sergeant said.

It turns out the couple had come to town to sell the drugs to the third person, he said.

Acevedo and Edwards were both released pending a hearing -- Acevedo on charges of failing to give drugs to police and Edwards on drug and weapons charges.

Assisting officers were Lt. Glenn Brunet, Sgt. Doug Arendacs and Detective Chris Bermudez.
